『きかんしゃトーマス』、和名正式名称『きかんしゃトーマスとなかまたち』とは、1984年からイギリスで放送が始まった1番ゲージの鉄道模型を使用して撮影される人形劇、現在はコンピュータを使用して制作されるCGアニメーションとして放送されている幼児向けテレビ番組である。
イギリスの架空の島ソドー島の鉄道で働く、顔と意志を持った蒸気機関車や車両たちと、それに関わる人々を描く。1986年には第2シリーズの放送が始まり、以後、放送形態・制作会社・制作形態を変更しながらシリーズは現在まで続いている。
Thomas & Friends (titled Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends prior to 2002) is a British-American children's television series, which had its first broadcast on the ITV network in 1984 and airs on PBS Kids in the US.
It is based on The Railway Series of books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher Awdry.
These books deal with the adventures of a group of anthropomorphised locomotives and road vehicles who live on the fictional Island of Sodor.
The books were based on stories Wilbert told to entertain his son, Christopher, during his recovery from measles. From the first four series, many of the stories are based on events from Awdry's personal experience.
